Composition Contest Form + Details

We are proud to announce our annual choral composition contest!

High school students (grades 9-12) and undergraduate college students are eligible to submit their choral works for consideration.

Compositions should reflect the theme and name of our June concert, RISE. Works with messages about overcoming obstacles in life are strongly encouraged.

Submissions must be received no later than 5 PM PST on Thursday, February 1, 2024.

First Place: $1,500 • live 2024 performance of work • recording of the performance | Second Place: $750 | Third Place: $500


Submission Criteria

  • Compositions should reflect the theme and name of our June concert, RISE.

  • All submissions must be an original composition for piano-accompanied or unaccompanied choir, four- to six-part SATB (mixed) choir (occasional eight-part divisi is acceptable). No other instrumentations will be accepted.

  • Text(s) may be sacred or secular. Text(s) may be in any language(s). It is the responsibility of the composer to obtain permission for the use of copyrighted text. If the text is not public domain, please include written permission to use it.

  • Any message about overcoming obstacles in life is strongly encouraged.

  • Composers should avoid texts in Latin, unless the work employs other languages in addition to Latin. Works exclusively in Latin will not be considered.

  • Performance time of the choral work should be 3 to 6 minutes in length.

  • The entry fee is $30, payable via PayPal by clicking here.

  • Multiple entries by the same composer are permitted. However, a separate application and entry fee of $30 must accompany each entry.

  • Please ensure a legible PDF of the score is linked. Scores submitted without applications will not be accepted.

  • A recording of the work is strongly encouraged.

  • The deadline for entry is 5 PM PST on Thursday, February 1, 2024. The contest winners will be announced on or by Monday, February 26, 2024.

  • Edits to the score may be required as the piece is being prepared. Winning composer must provide a final performance score upon request.

  • There are no restrictions according to race, sex, age, country of origin, religious affiliations, sexual identity, sexual orientation, or residency.

  • The Choral Project reserves the right not to award a prize. The artistic director’s decision is final.


By submitting this application form you are stating that all information entered is true to the best of your knowledge as of the date of submission. You acknowledge that this application does not guarantee any prize from The Choral Project but is an acknowledgement of your interest in participating in the contest. You understand that you must submit the following with your application form:

  • An entry fee of $30.

  • Your composition, which must meet the requirements of the contest.

  • If possible, a recording of your composition.

You understand that any and all contest materials will become the property of The Choral Project (but not the copyright). You also give The Choral Project permission to replicate your composition for the purpose of providing musicians copies that The Choral Project deems necessary for the review and performance of your composition for the express purpose of the contest.
