Della Maestra : Choral Gems by Women Composers

Friday, March 9, 2001, 8:00 PM
First Presbyterian Church of Sunnyvale

For hundreds of years, many masterpieces of art, literature and music have been hidden from us simply because their creator was a woman. Now in this enlightened age of the 21st century, we can celebrate the glory of ALL artists. In honor of Women's History Month, we commemorated the gifts of brilliant female composers, offering choral masterpieces by Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn, Vittoria-Rafaella Aleotti, Janika Vandervelde and Gwyneth Walker. The concert included the resplendent "Procession" from Hildegard von Bingen's Ordo virtutum, Lili Boulanger's evocative Hymne au Soleil, and Isabella Leonarda's masterful Messa Prima.

The San Jose Choral Project was pleased to announce their performance of "The Heart is the Compass: Music for a New Era." In an age where technology rules so much of our lives, it is more important than ever to reconnect to our community and to our spirit. The central theme of this concert program revolved around our humanity, our spirituality, our musical journey through the last century and a glimpse what the 21st-century has to offer us. Selections included works by Stanford, Vaughan Williams, Eric Whitacre, Mechem and the stunningly virtuosic "Magnificat" of Giles Swayne. At the center of the program were Zoltan Kodaly's rarely heard "Pange lingua," as well as world premieres by Brent Heisinger, Theodore Lucas and Neil Ginsberg.

Farewell Concert

The San José Choral Project embarked on its first international tour to Mexico and Costa Rica. At our Farewell Concert we shared selections from our repertoire including works by Swayne, Biebl, Rachmaninoff, Whitacre, and Pärt, as well as folk songs from Mexico, Costa Rica and the United States.
